What Is Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)?

Simply put, FFF 3D printing creates objects by depositing filament layer by layer. This additive manufacturing technique is by far the most popular and accessible used technique worldwide. It’s the go-to choice for consumers and a huge part of the professional market. Why? It’s reliable, affordable, and -nowadays - surprisingly intuitive to work with.

 

How the FFF Printing Process Works

Everything starts with a digital 3D model. You design an object (or download an existing file), send it to your printer, and the machine creates a physical part while you wait.

 

Inside the printer, a thermoplastic material (your filament) is fed through a heated nozzle. The plastic melts, is placed precisely where it needs to go, and solidifies. Each layer bonds to the previous one (layer adhesion), repeating the process until your object is complete. Whether you’re printing a simple PLA toy or a complex prototype using a fiber-filled engineering material, the principle is the same.

    • If it drops to 1.70 mm → under-extrusion (gaps, weak layers).

    Tight tolerances = dimensional accuracy.

  • 2. Roundness (Ovality)

    Filament must be perfectly round.

    If it’s oval, the extruder gears can’t grip properly, causing slips and inconsistent flow.

    An oval filament also melts unevenly, the heat doesn’t reach the core uniformly - which leads to unpredictable flow behavior and inconsistent mechanical properties.

  • 3. Material Consistency

    What you print today should look and perform the same next month.

    That means:

    • Consistent raw-material quality
    • Pure composition
    • No contamination
    • No air bubbles (those “pops” during printing)

    A consistent flow = strong mechanical parts, with optimal layer adhesion in X, Y, and Z.
